How Can Subject-Matter Experts Spend Less Time Writing Courseware?

SMEs are often the most expensive people to turn into full-time course writers. Their highest-value contribution is usually deciding what is correct, important, current, and safe to teach.

Shift the SME from first-draft author to authority and reviewer

  • Ask the SME to identify or approve authoritative sources.
  • Use a syllabus to confirm objectives, module scope, prerequisites, and hands-on expectations early.
  • Generate the coordinated first draft from that approved boundary.
  • Route ambiguous or high-risk findings back to the SME instead of silently inventing an answer.
  • Give the SME a focused technical review rather than asking for line-by-line authorship of every deliverable.

The goal is better use of expert time

Automation should reduce drafting, formatting, and repetitive assembly while preserving the SME’s role in technical acceptance. That makes expert review more scalable without pretending expertise has been automated away.

Put the workflow into practice.
